    Hertfordshire Project

One of the hundreds of projects we have completed over the years was a particularly high spec kitchen. We were asked to use various different types of lighting to enhance the various design features of the space. The project was delivered in a short time span and, as usual, we had to fit in with the various other trades involved with the project. Whilst it is not the norm to take photos of our work, we were sufficiently impressed with the end result to take a few pictures before we left site.

    Brunswick Boxing Club

Brunswick Boxing Club was a design and build project meaning we were given a basic outline of the requirements and were tasked to deliver a complete design package to suit the requirements of the client. The project was subject to very tight and specific goals set by the client, Richmond Council. We were able to design a robust and practical electrical installation that would stand up to the rigors of usage by numerous and very energetic young people. The design took into account, safety, energy efficiency, practicality and aesthetics; it had to be delivered professionally and within a budget.

    Edmundson Electrical

We were approached by Edmundson Electrical in 2011, we were asked to create a system that would look good and form a perfect marketing tool.

We chose to install Sharp PV Panels, Sharp have a very good reputation within the PV Industry and their products have a proven track record in reliability and quality. The framework chosen was an innovative new system designed and supplied by Schletter. After careful consideration we opted to install a market leading inverter supplied by Fronius, we were very impressed by the design of the Fronius CL range and the promised output was second to none.

Obviously we had to take Health and Safety seriously, we instructed PC Scaffolding of Walton to install a suitable system of access and protective handrail scaffolding which was done efficiently and exactly to our specifications. Internally a metal framework to protect against vehicular movement was constructed to surround our inverter, metering and switchgear.

We have also fitted Fronius data logger equipment which allows the client to display real time data onto a display screen, they can also monitor the system closely for both up to the minute pay back figures as well as system performance.

We are understandably very proud of this project, we have already had very positive feedback from potential clients and members of the electrical and renewable industry. We would strongly urge anyone who is thinking to install this type of system to contact us with a view to visiting this project.

    TAG Farnborough

We were approached by TAG, Farnborough Airport in 2014, we were asked to create a system that would look good and make maximum use of the space available on roof of their headquarters building. We chose to install Sharp PV Panels, Sharp have a very good reputation within the PV Industry and their products have a proven track record in reliability and quality.

The framework chosen was a bespoke system designed by ourselves and supplied by Walraven. The project called for specific criteria in order to fit 50kWp onto the roof whilst minimising shading between panels. We had to design an array of 128 panels on the south facing edge of the roof, whilst other areas of the roof needed to accommodate a further 70 panels. It soon became clear that a bespoke structure would be needed to accommodate 128 panels on one flat surface area in 4 rows of 32 panels. There was no product available designed to achieve this so we approached Walraven with our design. Walraven carried out design criteria calculations and came up with a very solid framework system that was delivered in pieces and constructed on site. We are very pleased with the results, the system is designed and guaranteed to last a minimum of 25 years, we think it is a practical, professional and good looking solution which enhances the overall look of the building.

After careful consideration we opted to install a market leading inverter supplied by Fronius, we were very impressed by the design of the Fronius CL range and the promised output was second to none. The system is connected to TAG, Farnborough Airports smart metering system and is already proving to return decent yields.

We are understandably very proud of this project and we’ve had very positive feedback from the client, TAG, Farnborough Airport Ltd.

    Griffin Park Stadium

    Background and lighting objectives
Based in the London borough of Hounslow, Brentford Football Club is a professional football club playing in the Football League Championship. Since 1904 the club has played its home games at Griffin Park football ground. Griffin Park is situated in a predominantly residential area and has a capacity of 12 300 football fans.
In the 2014/15 Season Brentford reached the Premier League playoffs for the first time. The club therefore contacted electrical contractors SPE Engineers to increase the stadium’s electrical capacity and lighting levels, which saw an average illumination of just 598 lux (2018-14 Season it was 426 lux).

    Lighting objectives
Brentford Football Club set a target for the new lighting at Griffin Park to achieve a pitch illumination level 20% above Championship standard. Improved colour quality was particularly important for TV broadcasting.
Brentford Football Club Operations Manager, Alan Walsh, says: “Our new Brentford FC Community Stadium is planned to open in 2018 based on the projected timeline, so keeping this in mind we needed a cost-effective solution which would conform to Championship rules and regulations but also take into account the remaining lifespan of Griffin Park.”
SPE Engineers Director, Steve Pearce, explains: “Given the layout and design of the stadium we needed to increase lighting levels to initially a minimum of 1000 lux at pitch level. However, we could only use the existing four floodlight towers.”

    Lighting solution
Steve continues: “The project required careful design and specification. We did this by working with our Thorn Account Manager Noel Whiffin and leveraging Thorn’s extensive experience to design a system that would squeeze the maximum effect from the site constraints.”

    Results and benefits
Speaking about the new pitch lighting, Alan says: “The outcome was remarkable. We were required to provide on average lux levels of 800 lux but have achieved close to 1200 lux. This has given us the basis to have a total constant light cover throughout the field of play with minimal shadow. If Brentford Football Club is successful in achieving Premier League status prior to the new Brentford Football Club Community Stadium, then we know we have a system in place that is not far off the demands of the premiership requirements.”

“Every game under the new floodlights at Griffin Park gives the supporters and visitors a warm feeling of excitement. The lighting colour complements everything around the pitch activity and game, which has been evident on numerous live broadcast productions. The reaction from staff, fans, players, media and photographers is that the field of play looks excellent under the floodlights with some people even asking the question why it took so long!”

Steve adds: “As well as providing us with good quality lighting equipment we benefited from Thorn’s extremely efficient customer service and industry experience. We have had dealings with other organisations within the industry but no one has come anywhere near the level of service and assistance provided by Thorn.”

“I think I can safely say that SPE Engineers now has a good deal of experience and expertise in stadium lighting. Thanks to Thorn, not only have we gained experience in conventional lighting but our learning curve has given us knowledge of new technologies coming on the market.”
“We have had great feedback from Brentford Football Club and are confident that new projects are well within our capabilities. This experience and knowledge has been gained with a great deal of assistance from our Thorn Account Manager and the rest of Thorn’s team. We look forward to future collaborations with Thorn and welcome the opportunity to keep up to date with its latest products and services.”
